Y Fflat Bach (The Little Flat)

Description

NEW FOR 2016! BOOK DIRECT WITH THE OWNER FOR A SMALL DISCOUNT OR VARIABLE DATES. "Y Fflat Bach" is situated on the award winning South Snowdon Wharf, a modern, private, quiet quayside development, formerly the old slate wharf, separated from the main town of Porthmadog by the River Glaslyn and the harbour. It is also adjacent to the world famous Ffestiniog Railway’s Harbour Station. A first floor, waterside property, the lounge has stunning views of the beautiful, ever changing tidal estuary and mountains beyond, from the Vale of Ffestiniog to the town of Harlech, with glimpses of the harbour and further mountains from the bedroom. It is the perfect place to sit and watch the abundant estuary bird life and the little steam trains sedately puffing across the causeway on their way into the Snowdonia National Park. The town centre is just a short stroll away, and the many amenities include a selection of individual shops, supermarkets, banks and a Post Office, inns, cafes and restaurants, and a leisure centre with a pool. Close by is access to the beach and Coastal Path at the pretty village of Borth-y-Gest, the magnificent sandy beach (Black Rock Sands) and golf course at Morfa Bychan and the famous Italianate Portmeirion village and gardens, the setting for the TV series “The Prisoner”. Most sports are available locally, or within a short drive, and all the major attractions of Snowdonia and North Wales are easily accessibly for a day out. Local Public Transport includes not only buses and main line trains, but also narrow gauge steam trains(we can supply official discounted tickets)! The flat is accessed via a communal staircase (serving 6 similar flats) and comprises an inner hall leading to the well appointed and comfortable lounge area, which has a 2 seater sofa plus small dining table and chairs. The modern fitted kitchen area has a full size electric cooker and more than adequate cooking and dining equipment. The bedroom (4'6" double bed+duvet) has pleasant mountain, harbour and steam railway views. A hair dryer is provided. The bathroom has a bath with electric shower over, heated towel rail and electric shaver point as well as a hand basin and WC. Outside, a patio door leads from the lounge to a small, private, east and south facing balcony with patio furniture, and mountain, steam railway, tidal estuary and sea views. Guests are also welcome to make use of the grounds of the estate to sit and enjoy the scenery. There is allocated off street parking for one car close to the flat, and guest parking for a further car elsewhere on the estate. The cost of electricity is included in the rental price (there is no gas supply). WiFi is available in the flat at an extra charge through an independent Internet provider, but is free at the bar on the station a short walk away. We regret that the nature of the building makes the flat unsuitable for those with restricted mobility, children under 12 and pets.

Porthmadog, known locally as “Port”, is a small harbour town on the Glaslyn Estuary in the Eifionydd area of Gwynedd, Wales. It developed as a port exporting slate in the 19th century, and was named after W.A. Maddocks who had designed an ambitious “Cob” embankment scheme. Since the decline of the slate industry it has become a significant shopping centre for the region and as well as a popular holiday destination. The sandy beach at Blackrock Sands on the outskirts of Porthmadog stretches for miles, and cars are able to drive onto the beach and park there.

The town’s setting is particularly impressive, as it is dominated on one side by a mountain called “Moel y Gest”, 262 metres above the town. To the north and east the sweeping expanse of the estuary, renowned as a haven for wildlife and migrating birds, extends dramatically towards the Snowdon range. The town is often referred to as the Gateway to Snowdon, and the Ffestiniog Railway terminates here.

Porthmadog has a number of craft shops and restaurants. It is served by three railway stations as well as various buses and coaches. The ashes of the poet R.S. Thomas are buried in the churchyard at St John’s Church on Ffordd Penamser, and Percy Bysshe Shelley is reputed to have visited the area regularly.

Other places nearby include Morfa Bychan, Prenteg, Penrhyndeudraeth, Talsarnau, and Harlech.
